Dorothy
- Sourced Responsibly
Dorothy Hodgkin's revolutionary X-ray crystallography unveiled the hidden architecture of life's most vital molecules—penicillin, vitamin B12, and insulin. Her meticulous precision and unwavering determination, even while battling rheumatoid arthritis, earned her the Nobel Prize and transformed modern medicine. Like the perfectly aligned crystals she studied, our Dorothy ring celebrates her legacy through precise princess-cut diamonds set in an unbroken line of brilliance. Each stone honours her methodical dedication—a tribute to the woman who revealed order within complexity and light within darkness.
Our Dorothy ring features a striking channel setting with a linear row of princess-cut diamonds precisely positioned along the band's surface. The clean geometric lines and substantial profile create a bold, contemporary statement while the secure channel setting protects each diamond within the gold framework. This design celebrates precision and structure, with each perfectly aligned stone creating an unbroken line of brilliance. The wide band provides comfortable all-day wear while the flush-set diamonds maintain a sleek, sophisticated silhouette perfect for both professional and personal settings.

This ring honours Dorothy Hodgkin, a pioneering English chemist who advanced X-ray crystallography to determine the structure of biomolecules. Born in 1910, she became fascinated with crystals at age 10 when her mother gave her a book by William Henry Bragg describing how to "shine X-rays through a crystal to discover the arrangement of its atoms." Through extensive X-ray diffraction images and astute analysis, she successfully determined the structures of penicillin in 1946 and vitamin B12 in 1956, revolutionizing laboratory practice by using early computers for the complex calculations required. Her work on vitamin B12 was described as equivalent to "breaking the sound barrier" - she had unravelled a molecule with 100 atoms, an unprecedented feat at the time. After 35 years of work, she finally solved the structure of insulin in 1969. In 1964, she won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, becoming the third woman ever to receive this honour and the only British woman to win a Nobel Prize in science. Despite suffering from rheumatoid arthritis from her late twenties, she remained generous, humble and hard-working throughout her career, never letting her condition deter her from her ground-breaking research. Like the precise crystalline structures she revealed, our Dorothy ring celebrates order, determination, and the beautiful clarity that emerges from methodical dedication to one's craft.
Our skilled team digitally creates all images in our 'Create Your Ring Online' selection. The images are not photographs but are photorealistic. Most are designed with the aid of AI, and many start with a sketch on paper or Procreate as their foundation. Many are reworked with Photoshop. This is to create the most accurate images of rings that are yet to be made, providing a representation of how these rings will look in person. Once you choose your design, we will create your ring to the specifications you have chosen, including width and ring size. We guarantee your ring will be very close to, if not exactly the same as, the supplied images in line with Australian consumer law. The ring you will receive is unique to you.
