Topaz | Utopian Creations

Topaz is a durable and colourful gemstone, best known for its golden, orange and blue varieties. It is the birthstone for November in its precious or imperial forms, and blue topaz is also recognised as a December birthstone. Topaz is also traditionally associated with the 4th and 23rd wedding anniversaries.

With a hardness of 8 on the Mohs scale, topaz is suitable for many jewellery designs, including rings, earrings and pendants. However, it has a directional cleavage, which means it should still be protected from sharp knocks and heavy impacts. Thoughtful setting design is especially important for pieces intended for regular wear.

Natural topaz occurs in a wide range of colours, including colourless, yellow, orange, pink, red, purple, blue and green. Much of the blue topaz seen in jewellery begins as colourless topaz that has been treated to create a stable blue colour. Imperial topaz, prized for its rich golden-orange, pinkish-orange and reddish tones, is among the rarest and most valued varieties.

At Utopian Creations, our topaz is typically sourced from O’Brien’s Creek near Mount Surprise in Queensland, an Australian locality known for its natural topaz. Each stone is selected for its colour, brightness and character, with origin and treatment details recorded clearly wherever they are known.
