Loose Natural Emeralds | Utopian Creations
Emerald is one of the great gemstones — a colour so distinctly its own that no other stone comes close. From the misty highlands of Colombia to the ancient deposits of Zambia, each origin produces something subtly different in tone and character, and we've spent years building a collection that reflects that range.
Rare by Nature
Australian emeralds are particularly special. Commercial mining has effectively ceased, meaning the stones we hold come from old collections, estate parcels, and patient years of careful sourcing — hand fossicked or recovered by miners and gem cutters who worked these deposits when they were still active. Owning one is, in a quiet way, owning a piece of Australian geological history.
What to Know Before You Choose
Emeralds sit between 7.5 and 8 on the Mohs scale — harder than most people expect, but softer than sapphires and diamonds, and deserving of a little more care in setting and wear. Their colour is graded on hue, tonal depth, and saturation, and the finest stones carry a warmth and life — what the trade calls jardin — that no photograph quite captures.
Emerald is the birthstone for May and the traditional gift for both 20th and 35th anniversaries.
