Opal | Utopian Creations

Opal is one of Australia’s most iconic gemstones, loved for its shifting play of colour and naturally individual character. It is the birthstone for October and is traditionally associated with the 14th wedding anniversary.

Although opal can be found in several parts of the world, Australia is by far the most important source, producing the vast majority of the world’s precious opal. Australian opals are especially valued for their diversity, from soft white opal and crystal opal through to Queensland boulder opal and the rare, dramatic colours of black opal.

Opal is usually grouped into several main types, including white opal, crystal or water opal, boulder opal, fire opal and black opal. Each has its own structure, colour behaviour and visual personality.

With a hardness of around 5 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale, opal is softer than many gemstones used in fine jewellery. It can chip, scratch or craze if exposed to hard knocks, harsh conditions or inappropriate wear. For this reason, we generally do not recommend opal for engagement rings or everyday rings. It is better suited to earrings, pendants, occasional-wear rings, or protective settings designed with care.

At Utopian Creations, our opals are typically sourced from Australian fields, including South Australian and Queensland material. Each stone is selected for its colour, pattern, character and suitability for the jewellery piece it may become.
