Why Choose an Emerald

  • Emerald is one of the great historic gemstones, loved for its rich green colour and the natural character often seen within the stone.
  • Each emerald has its own personality. Colour, tone, clarity, cut and origin can vary widely, making emeralds especially appealing for one-of-a-kind jewellery.
  • Australian emeralds are a distinctive choice for clients who value unusual provenance, local connection and gemstones that feel more individual than conventionally perfect.
  • With a Mohs hardness of 7.5–8, emerald can be suitable for carefully designed rings and jewellery, but it needs more thoughtful setting and care than sapphire, ruby or diamond.
  • We assess emeralds individually, with attention to treatment, inclusions, durability and setting style, so the finished piece is both beautiful and responsibly considered.

Emerald FAQs

Is emerald suitable for an engagement ring?

Emerald can be used in an engagement ring, but it needs a more careful approach than sapphire, ruby or diamond. Emeralds often contain natural inclusions and can be more vulnerable to knocks, sharp corners and harsh cleaning. We usually recommend protective settings, sensible proportions and realistic care expectations.

Are emeralds usually treated?

Many emeralds in the international trade are treated with oil or resin to improve the appearance of surface-reaching fissures. This is common and accepted when properly disclosed. Some emeralds show no evidence of treatment, and those stones can be especially desirable when the colour and clarity are attractive.

What makes Australian emeralds different?

Australian emeralds are less commonly seen than emeralds from famous international sources such as Colombia, Zambia or Brazil. They often appeal because of their provenance, rarity in the local market and individual natural character rather than a standardised commercial appearance.

How should emerald jewellery be cared for?

Emerald jewellery should be worn with care and cleaned gently. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners, steam cleaners, harsh chemicals and heavy knocks. Warm soapy water, a soft brush and professional inspection are usually the safest approach.

Sourcing & Craftsmanship

Emerald is a gemstone where sourcing, treatment and individual assessment matter. Colour and origin are important, but so are clarity characteristics, stability, treatment disclosure and the way the stone will be set.

Our emerald selection includes unusual Australian emeralds alongside carefully chosen international stones. Australian emeralds are especially meaningful for clients who value local provenance and a less common alternative to the classic Colombian, Zambian or Brazilian emerald story.

Emeralds may be untreated or treated, most commonly with minor oiling in the broader trade. We disclose treatment information where it is available and consider what that means for beauty, value, durability and care.

For custom jewellery, we favour emeralds that suit the design physically as well as visually. A beautiful emerald should not only have the right colour; it should be chosen with its inclusions, cut, setting style and intended wear in mind.
