Why Choose a Tourmaline

  • Tourmaline is loved for its extraordinary colour range, from fresh greens and vivid pinks to blue, teal and multi-tonal stones.
  • Many tourmalines have a lively, modern character that suits custom jewellery, especially when the colour is unusual or difficult to find in more traditional gemstones.
  • Blue, teal and green tourmalines can offer a rich alternative to sapphire, emerald or aquamarine, with their own distinctive colour personality.
  • With a Mohs hardness of 7–7.5, tourmaline can be suitable for many jewellery designs, but it should be set and worn with more care than sapphire, ruby or diamond.
  • We choose tourmalines individually, considering colour, clarity, cut, durability and origin so the stone suits both the design and the way the piece will be worn.

Tourmaline FAQs

Is tourmaline suitable for an engagement ring?

Tourmaline can be used in engagement rings, but it needs thoughtful design and realistic care. It is not as hard or tough as sapphire, ruby or diamond, so protective settings, sensible stone shapes and careful everyday wear are important.

What colours does tourmaline come in?

Tourmaline is one of the most colour-diverse gemstones. It can occur in pink, green, blue, teal, yellow, brown and multi-coloured forms. Some of the most exciting stones sit between colour categories, such as blue-green, teal-green or neon green.

What is indicolite tourmaline?

Indicolite is the blue variety of tourmaline. Fine indicolite can range from blue to blue-green or teal-blue, and is often chosen by clients who want a distinctive coloured gemstone with depth and individuality.

How should tourmaline jewellery be cared for?

Tourmaline jewellery should be protected from hard knocks, harsh chemicals, ultrasonic cleaners and sudden temperature changes. Warm soapy water, a soft brush and periodic professional checks are usually the safest care approach.

Sourcing & Craftsmanship

Tourmaline is a gemstone where colour drives much of the appeal. We look for stones with strong personality: vivid greens, blue-greens, teal tones, pinks and unusual colour blends that can make a custom piece feel highly individual.

Our current tourmaline selection includes Nigerian stones with blue, teal and green colour, as well as occasional Australian tourmaline. Nigerian tourmalines can offer particularly expressive colours, including indicolite blues, teal-greens and bright green tones.

As with all gemstones, treatment and origin should be considered honestly. Where treatment information is available, we disclose it, and we assess each tourmaline for colour, clarity, cut and suitability for the intended jewellery design.

For custom jewellery, we favour tourmalines that balance beauty with practicality. The right stone should not only have a compelling colour; it should be selected with its shape, size, inclusions, setting style and expected wear in mind.

These guys are amazing at what they do. They created my beautiful engagement ring, as well as both of our wedding rings. We appreciate the stories behind all of the gems that they use and the hard work they put into all their creations. They are clearly passionate about what they do and I recommend them very highly.
