2.20ct Australian Sapphire, Parti, Blue, Yellow - Rose Cut Freeform

This is a very interesting rose-cut freeform sapphire. Freeform refers to the shape. The shape follows the shape of the original piece of rough and is not a particular shape; it's said to be freeform. Rose cut refers to the faceting pattern. This piece is flat on the bottom and rose-cut on the top. This makes for a sapphire that can be set very low on the finger or could be used for a dangling earring.

It is dark blue with an edging of yellow at one end and some silvery bands of rutile running through the middle. In this style gemstone the silky rutile inclusions are more of a bonus rather than a negative.

Please keep in mind that many Australian sapphires will change colour slightly depending on the light source, especially teal-coloured sapphires and parti sapphires. Strictly speaking, parti sapphires contain three or more colours within one sapphire, two colours being bi-coloured. To make it easier most people refer to any sapphire that has two or more colours within it a parti sapphire. Parti comes from the word partition, as the colours are normally segregated and don't blend. However, light passing through the gemstone may blend the colours, bringing an almost kaleidoscope effect. Generally, natural light will bring about more blue tones, and artificial light more green.
