2.03ct Australian Sapphire, Blue, Teal - Pear

A glorious Australian sapphire with light blue sparkling throughout. Pear shapes can vary significantly; this piece has a lovely, slightly longer, elegant nose that would look lovely laying north-south down a finger or equally beautiful in an untraditional east-west design. Proportions are important in pears to create colour and sparkle in the center of the gemstone, and this piece has been cut to perfection.

There is a small amount of "silk" in the sapphire which is often removed with heat treatment, but in this case, it's been left totally natural and untreated. This makes us very happy as it gives the sapphire a slight glow in low light as the available light reflects off of the silk. This is also seen in the world's most highly regarded sapphires from Kashmir.

Silk is a term used to describe rutile or other crystal needles that often grow inside sapphire. In many cases you need a microscope to see their shape but they act like fine silk reflecting light. Heat treatment partly dissolves the silk making the gemstone sparle more. Depending on the gemstone and the amount of silk it can be beneficial to leave the silk as has been done in this example.
