A lovely old mine cut diamond probably faceted around 1880-1920. It has a very pale champagne tone and would be perfect set in platinum to accentuate its champagne colouring. It would also be suitable as part of a ring cluster or a petite Toi et Moi ring design.

Why Choose an Antique & Vintage Diamond

Antique and vintage diamonds carry a sense of history, romance and individuality. Their older cutting styles often show broader flashes of light and a softer character than modern brilliant cuts, making each stone feel personal and storied.

Old-World Character β€” Antique and vintage diamonds have a charm that comes from older cutting styles, hand-finished proportions and a softer, less standardised kind of brilliance.

Individual Light Performance β€” Rather than the precise sparkle of a modern brilliant cut, antique diamonds often show broader flashes, deeper contrast and a more candlelit style of fire.

A Meaningful Reuse of Existing Diamonds β€” Many antique and vintage diamonds are already in circulation, making them a thoughtful choice for people who value reuse, history and existing materials.

Distinctive Design Potential β€” Old mine cuts, old European cuts, rose cuts and transitional cuts suit heirloom-inspired, romantic, architectural and one-of-a-kind jewellery designs.

Antique & Vintage Diamond FAQs

Q: What is an antique or vintage diamond?

A: An antique or vintage diamond is a diamond from an earlier era, or a diamond cut in an older style. This can include old mine cut, old European cut, rose cut, transitional cut and other historic cutting styles.

Q: Are antique diamonds real diamonds?

A: Yes. Antique and vintage diamonds are real diamonds. Their difference is not the material, but their age, cutting style, proportions and character.

Q: Do antique diamonds sparkle less than modern diamonds?

A: They sparkle differently. Modern brilliant cuts are usually designed for maximum brightness and precision, while antique cuts often show broader flashes of light, deeper contrast and a softer, more romantic appearance.

Q: Are antique diamonds suitable for engagement rings?

A: Yes, many antique and vintage diamonds are suitable for engagement rings. As with any diamond, we assess the stone’s condition, edge wear, inclusions, proportions and setting style before recommending it for daily wear.

Q: Are antique diamonds a sustainable choice?

A: They can be. Reusing an existing diamond can be a meaningful way to create new jewellery without requiring a newly mined stone. We still assess each diamond individually for beauty, durability and suitability.

Sourcing & Craftsmanship

Antique and vintage diamonds are valued for history, character and individuality. Unlike modern diamonds, which are often cut to highly standardised proportions, older diamonds reflect the tools, lighting conditions and cutting preferences of their time. Many were cut before electric lighting was common, which is why they can show a softer, broader and more atmospheric style of light return.

This category includes several different cutting traditions. Old mine cuts are often cushion-like, with high crowns, small tables and a hand-cut personality. Old European cuts are generally rounder, with broad facets and a distinctive antique sparkle. Rose cuts have a flat base and a domed, faceted top, creating a more subtle, glassy and romantic appearance. Transitional cuts sit between antique and modern cutting styles, often showing elements of both.

Because antique diamonds have lived a previous life, condition matters. Some older stones show small chips, abrasions, repolishing, asymmetry or wear along the girdle. These features are not always a problem, but they need to be understood before the stone is set. We look carefully at the diamond’s structure, edges, inclusions and proportions so the finished piece is both beautiful and practical.

Antique and vintage diamonds are often chosen by people who want jewellery with a sense of continuity. They can feel romantic, understated, architectural, old-world or deeply personal depending on the stone and setting. Their beauty is rarely about perfect uniformity; it is about character, history and the particular way the diamond catches light.

For us, responsible antique and vintage diamond sourcing means choosing stones with care, describing them honestly and respecting their existing character. Where a diamond is genuinely antique, vintage, recycled or of known provenance, we aim to make that clear. The most important thing is transparency: understanding what the diamond is, what condition it is in, and how it can be used safely and beautifully in new jewellery.
