Lise
- Sourced Responsibly
Our Lise Ring (named after Lise Meitner and her incredible discoveries in nuclear physics) features an elegant wave-like design with a gentle, flowing curve that creates a sophisticated and modern silhouette. This refined ring showcases exceptional craftsmanship with its smooth, continuous wave form that captures and reflects light beautifully while symbolising the invisible forces that shape our universe. Designed with comfort in mind, it has a smooth inside that makes it very easy to wear. The timeless wave pattern creates contemporary elegance while representing the flow of energy and discovery, perfect for daily wear.
Meitner's greatest discovery came in 1938-1939 when she explained the physics behind nuclear fission. After being forced to flee Nazi Germany due to her Jewish heritage, she continued her work from exile in Sweden. When her colleague Otto Hahn reported puzzling experimental results, Meitner and her nephew Otto Frisch provided the crucial theoretical explanation: uranium atoms were actually splitting in half, releasing enormous amounts of energy. Walking through the snowy woods of Sweden on Christmas vacation, they worked out the mathematics of this process, which they named "nuclear fission."

This ring has been named after the remarkable **Lise Meitner**, the pioneering Austrian-born physicist whose theoretical brilliance unlocked the secrets of the atom and forever changed our understanding of nuclear physics. Born on November 7, 1878, in Vienna to a progressive Jewish family, Meitner was encouraged to pursue education despite the era's restrictions on women. She enrolled at the University of Vienna in 1901 and became only the second woman to earn a PhD in Physics there in 1905, specializing in radioactivity and atomic theory. In 1907, Meitner moved to Berlin to work with renowned physicist Max Planck and chemist Otto Hahn, beginning a remarkable 30-year collaboration. Despite facing significant gender discrimination—working initially in a basement laboratory with a separate entrance so she wouldn't disturb male colleagues—Meitner's brilliance soon earned recognition. In 1918, she and Hahn co-discovered the element protactinium, and in 1922, Meitner became the first female physics professor in Germany, praised by Albert Einstein as "our Marie Curie." Meitner's greatest discovery came in 1938-1939 when she explained the physics behind nuclear fission. Walking through the snowy woods of Sweden on Christmas vacation, they worked out the mathematics of this process, which they named "nuclear fission." This discovery revolutionized physics and led to both nuclear power and nuclear weapons, though Meitner famously refused to work on the atomic bomb, declaring, "I will have nothing to do with a bomb!" Despite her fundamental contributions, she was overlooked when Otto Hahn alone received the 1944 Nobel Prize for nuclear fission—one of science's most notorious oversights. However, her legacy endures: element 109, meitnerium, was named in her honor in 1997, making her the first non-mythological woman to have an element named exclusively after her. Like the graceful wave of this elegant ring, Meitner's work revealed how energy flows through the universe in wave-like patterns—from the splitting of atomic nuclei to the radiation that powers modern medical imaging and cancer treatments. Her epitaph reads "A physicist who never lost her humanity," reflecting a scientist whose elegant theoretical insights continue to ripple through physics, medicine, and our understanding of the fundamental forces of nature.
Our skilled team digitally creates all images in our 'Create Your Ring Online' selection. The images are not photographs but are photorealistic. Most are designed with the aid of AI, and many start with a sketch on paper or Procreate as their foundation. Many are reworked with Photoshop. This is to create the most accurate images of rings that are yet to be made, providing a representation of how these rings will look in person. Once you choose your design, we will create your ring to the specifications you have chosen, including width and ring size. We guarantee your ring will be very close to, if not exactly the same as, the supplied images in line with Australian consumer law. The ring you will receive is unique to you.
If you prefer to see photos of a real ring that is available for purchase from our inventory, check out our 'Ready to Wear' collection. Here, you'll find a curated selection of unique rings that our team has carefully crafted. These are available for immediate shipping or pickup from our store in Adelaide's East End.
