This ring has been named after the extraordinary Rita Levi-Montalcini, a pioneering Italian neurobiologist who transformed our understanding of the nervous system. Born on April 22, 1909, in Turin, Italy, Levi-Montalcini faced tremendous adversity as a Jewish woman in Fascist Italy. During World War II, she remarkably set up a makeshift laboratory in her bedroom to continue her research on nerve development using chick embryos. In 1952, she made her ground-breaking discovery of nerve growth factor (NGF) - a protein essential for the growth, maintenance, and survival of nerve cells. This discovery revolutionized neurobiology and opened new frontiers in understanding how the nervous system develops and functions. In 1986, she was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine jointly with Stanley Cohen for this monumental achievement. Levi-Montalcini became the first Nobel laureate to reach age 100 and served as Senator for Life in the Italian Senate. Her tenacity, brilliance, and dedication to science - even under the most challenging circumstances - exemplify the resilience and beauty that this ring represents.
