This ring has been named after the remarkable **Sir Alexander Fleming**, a pioneering Scottish bacteriologist whose accidental discovery revolutionized modern medicine. Born on August 6, 1881, on a farm in Lochfield, Scotland, Fleming initially worked in a shipping office for four years before using his inheritance to pursue medical education at St. Mary's Hospital Medical School in London. After serving as a military physician during World War I, he returned to St. Mary's Hospital where he would make his legendary discoveries. Fleming's journey to greatness began with his discovery of lysozyme in 1921, when a drop of his nasal mucus accidentally fell onto a bacterial culture, leading him to identify this natural antibacterial enzyme found in tears and saliva. However, his most famous discovery came on September 28, 1928, when he returned from vacation to find that a mold had contaminated one of his bacterial culture plates. Rather than discarding the "ruined" experiment, Fleming's keen observational skills led him to notice that bacteria around the mold had been killed. This chance observation of Penicillium notatum would change the course of human history. Fleming isolated the active substance and named it "penicillin," recognizing its potential as the world's first true antibiotic. Though he initially struggled to produce it in large quantities, his work laid the foundation for what would become the antibiotic revolution. During World War II, Howard Florey and Ernst Chain refined Fleming's work, enabling mass production of penicillin that saved countless soldiers' lives and later civilians worldwide. In 1945, Fleming shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Florey and Chain "for the discovery of penicillin and its curative effect in various infectious diseases." Fleming was knighted in 1944 for his contributions to medicine. His discovery has been called one of the greatest advances in therapeutic medicine, ushering in the antibiotic era and saving millions of lives from bacterial infections. Like the endless loops of this elegant ring, Fleming's legacy continues to impact medicine and humanity in perpetual cycles of healing and hope.
Our skilled team digitally creates all images in our 'Create Your Ring Online' selection. The images are not photographs but are photorealistic. Most are designed with the aid of AI, and many start with a sketch on paper or Procreate as their foundation. Many are reworked with Photoshop. This is to create the most accurate images of rings that are yet to be made, providing a representation of how these rings will look in person. Once you choose your design, we will create your ring to the specifications you have chosen, including width and ring size. We guarantee your ring will be very close to, if not exactly the same as, the supplied images in line with Australian consumer law. The ring you will receive is unique to you.
