6.18ct Australian Topaz, Blue - Oval Cut
Topaz is a lovely gemstone, very hard, one of the few gemstones suitable for everyday wear, however please keep in mind it is softer and more brittle than diamond or sapphire and therefore has a greater chance of chipping. Traditional bright blue topaz generally starts it life as a pale brown, then its treated with heat or radiation to change it to a number of different shades of blue. This however, is completely untreated Australian blue topaz. Its far lighter than treated topaz, a light sky blue, similar to the lightest of blue sapphire. This Topaz has some areas of blue and other areas that are completely colourless, its very pretty. The last two photos were backlit and taken with our gemological microscope. This helps to show up any inclusions and here we can see a couple of amazing comet like inclusions that are often seen in Topaz. These are very difficult to see without magnification and they dont detract from the gemstone at all, in fact we think they are a real bonus. If you are looking for a pale blue gemstone for an engagement ring or everyday dress ring Australian blue topaz is a, budget friendly choice (however please keep in mind it can be brittle). We have spent years acquiring rough blue topaz from O'Brians creek in Queensland and can have it cut to order if you have a special shape or size you would like.

If you choose to take the piece loose or view it in your own home before returning for manufacturing it will come beautifully packaged in a sustainably grown timber gem box. Some of our customers have actually proposed this way, with the loose gem in our nice box. Then both partners can be involved in the design and manufacturing of the piece. A thoughtful way to start the next chapter of your lives together.

Why Choose a Topaz

  • Topaz is loved for its clean brightness and appealing colour range, including soft sky blue, stronger blue tones and warm golden varieties.
  • Blue topaz can offer a fresh, luminous look in jewellery, especially for clients who want a lighter and more open colour than sapphire.
  • Australian topaz and recycled topaz can be meaningful choices for clients who value local provenance, reuse and considered sourcing.
  • With a Mohs hardness of 8, topaz has good scratch resistance, but it should still be protected from sharp knocks because of its cleavage.
  • We assess topaz individually for colour, cut, clarity, origin and setting suitability so the finished piece is both beautiful and practical.

Topaz FAQs

Is topaz suitable for an engagement ring?

Topaz can be used in rings, but it needs thoughtful design and careful wear. Although it has a Mohs hardness of 8, topaz has cleavage, which means it can split or chip if struck in the wrong direction. Protective settings and realistic care expectations are important.

What colour is topaz?

Topaz occurs in a range of colours, including blue, yellow, orange, pink and colourless. Blue topaz is especially popular for its clear, bright and accessible colour.

What does recycled topaz mean?

A recycled topaz has been removed from a previous piece of jewellery or older setting and made available for new jewellery. It can be a thoughtful option for clients who value reuse and existing materials.

How should topaz jewellery be cared for?

Topaz jewellery should be protected from hard knocks, harsh chemicals, ultrasonic cleaners and sudden temperature changes. Clean gently with warm soapy water and a soft brush, and have rings checked periodically.

Sourcing & Craftsmanship

Topaz sourcing is about colour, clarity, origin and suitability for the design. We look for stones with appealing colour, good cutting and a shape that can be set securely.

Our topaz selection includes Australian blue topaz and recycled blue topaz. These options suit clients who value local provenance, reuse or a lighter blue gemstone with a clean, luminous look.

Although topaz has good hardness, durability is not only about scratch resistance. We consider each stone’s shape, size and setting style carefully because topaz can be vulnerable to sharp knocks.

For custom jewellery, we favour topaz designs that protect the stone while allowing its colour and brightness to remain the focus.

These guys are amazing at what they do. They created my beautiful engagement ring, as well as both of our wedding rings. We appreciate the stories behind all of the gems that they use and the hard work they put into all their creations. They are clearly passionate about what they do and I recommend them very highly.

Kept me updated every step of the way, never got annoyed with me with the extreme amount of email I sent and questions I asked. Jess adores the ring and I could not be happier. Thank you again Ben and Utopian Creations
