Spinel | Utopian Creations

Spinel is one of the great underappreciated gemstones — durable, vivid and naturally beautiful. For centuries, fine red spinels were mistaken for rubies, including some of the most famous “rubies” in royal collections.

Today, spinel is valued in its own right for its lively brilliance, excellent wearability and remarkable colour range. It can be found in raspberry red, violet, purple, pink, grey, blue and black, with each stone offering its own balance of colour, brightness and character.

With a hardness of 8 on the Mohs scale, spinel is suitable for many jewellery designs when set thoughtfully and worn with care. It is a beautiful choice for earrings, pendants and special rings, and can also be considered for more regular wear with the right design.

At Utopian Creations, our spinels are chosen for their colour, individuality and provenance. Some are Australian, while others come from carefully selected international sources. Where origin details are known, we record them clearly so you can understand the story behind the stone.
